Arts Center Course Offerings and Brief Descriptions:
CHILDREN'S
PROGRAMS Preschool & Elementary (Ages 3 through 7 by December
31 for fall session)
Movement Adventures 1:
(Ages 3 - 4),Movement Adventures 2 (Ages 4 - 5), Movement Adventures 3 (Ages 5 - 6), Movement Adventures 4 (Ages 6 - 7)
Movement Adventures 1 &
2: Children have fun learning proper ballet terminology, correct body
placement and fundamental dance steps as they discover and develop
their own creativity. Class meets once a week for 45 minutes.
Movement Adventures 3 &
4: Emphasis is placed on the development of correct body placement and
classical ballet theory.Students will also learn basic tap technique
and contemporary movements of modern jazz. Class meets once a week for
60 minutes.
All dance attire
available through the MAC.
Ballet Technique:
Class deals with basic principles of ballet technique including
vocabulary, placement and alignment; including barre, center adagio and
allegro. Emphasis is placed on strength, balance and line. Vocational
ballet students age 9 and up will take several lessons per week to
prepare them for the great technical and physical demands needed to
excel as a ballet professional. Students will begin pointe work ONLY
when the instructor feels student is ready. Pointe students must take 2
or more ballet classes per week; have been taking full length ballet
technique class 2x per week for at least 3 years, and are past their
12th birthday.
Baton:
Students will develop basic to advanced baton handling. Special
emphasis is placed on technique, coordination, movement and body
alignment.
Colorguard; Flag,
Sabre and Rifle technique: Students develop proper skills needed to
handle all 3 pieces of equipment.
Dance Composition:
Study of how to make dances. This beginning course focuses on basic
principles of choreography such as time, space, form and structure.
Improvisation and how it relates to choreography is also a key
component in this class. Students will make a solo dance, create duets
and ensemble works.
Hip Hop: Seen
primarily on TV during rap and R &B music videos, hip hop is a form
that evolved out of street and brake dancing moves, and is
characterized by its vigorous athletics and bouncy style. Hip Hop is
danced primarily to Rap and R &B music, and knee pads are needed
for all levels above basic.
Hungarian Ethnic
Dance: Learn some of the basic dance idioms from dances across
Hungary. These dances are highly stylized with intricate rhythmic
patterns.
Jazz Technique:
Jazz dance technique and its origin. Opposition, syncopation,
isolations, physicality as well as musicality and rhythm-structure make
up the elements of this technique. Class includes warm-up, center floor
and across the floor combinations.
Modern Technique:
Learning successful execution of the components of modern dance. Class
includes a warm-up, center floor sequences, as well as traveling
phrases. Based on the principles of space, time, energy and alignment.
Work also includes clarity of intent, strength and stamina and weight
and momentum.
Pilates: “The
Pilates method of body conditioning is a unique system of stretching
and strengthening exercises developed over ninety years ago by Joseph
H. Pilates. It strengthens and tones muscles, improves posture,
provides flexibility and balance, unites body and mind, and creates a
more streamlined shape.” The Pilates Body, by Brooke Siler Pilates. Mat
exercise is a conditioning program based on the work of Joseph H.
Pilates. This method improves muscle control, flexibility,
coordination, strength, and tone. Participants become more aware of
their bodies, improve alignment and breathing, and increase efficiency
of movement. In a sequence of carefully performed movements, each
exercise is designed to stretch and strengthen the muscles involved,
opening the joints and releasing tension. Dress requirements: Men:
shorts or sweatpants, t-shirt, NO SHOES Women: dancewear, leggings,
bike pants, t-shirt, NO SHOES Bring an exercise mat Contraindications:
people with spine injuries (slipped disc), or recent hernia operation,
and pregnant women should refrain from this exercise or proceed only by
the advice of a physician.
Tap: The
dancers will learn to build on simple tap basics as they develop rhythm
and precision. Terminology, rhythm and timing development are the basic
lesson for all levels.
Yoga: Hatha
Yoga is a system of exercises and breathing practices designed to
create and maintain a healthy balance between the thoughts/emotions of
the mind and the tension/energy of the body. Hatha Yoga combines the
physical practice of poses (asana) and breathing exercises (pranayama)
to keep the body and mind working harmoniously. Appropriate Attire for
class: loose, comfortable clothing, NO SHOES or SOCKS bring a yoga or
exercise mat and a small blanket or towel.
